Indoor Skydiving

While a wind tunnel cannott simulate all parts of a skydive , it can simulate the freefall which can be a little overwhelming at first while learning to skydive. Freefall Simulators during your AFF course can take the pressure of you and even better you get to do it with your AFF instructor for seamless learning. On a minute per minute basis from a training perspective its fantastic value for money.

High fidelity Freefall Simulator

A wind tunnel is a high fidelity device where giant fans far away from the flight chamber circulate air at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour. The tunnel flight speed will be set depending on what orientation people will fly. For students learning to skydive on their belly or " belly flying " the speed will be set to around 120 miles per hour and for more advanced orientations such as head down , speeds of 180 miles per hour are not uncommon. As skydivers we value large flight chambers in terms of both diameter and height. Our tunnels are up to 5.25meters in diameter and 20m high giving us loads of space to learn. Open bright tunnels such as those we use with 360 degree hardened glass windows add to the sense of open space in which to fly. Each Tunnel flight lasts two minutes with time out to watch HD video of your flight and get briefed for the next flight.

Indoor Skydiving during AFF courses.

For beginners and their instructors wind tunnels are a real boon! They allow us in a low stress environment teach you how to fly your body. Pre arming you with oodles of information and practical experience before you attempt the various levels on an accelerated freefall course. Many people dont realise that when booking an AFF course , you are booking one attempt at each level. Skydiving isnt rocket science but its not golf either so some people will struggle a little to get their balance and this struggle may lead to the need for extra tuition at a cost .

Therefore our practical experience is that going into the wind tunnel with your AFF instructor at some point of your course is a fantastic idea. For some it will be before your first skydive and for many it will be between key levels. Have a chat with us about learning to skydive and we can take you through some common scenarios where people really benefit from flying in the tunnel during their course.

Advanced Skydiving Skills Courses.

For both belly flyers and people looking to advance their freefly skills we have the best tunnels and best coaches. Across the disciplines our coaches individually have 1000s of tunnel hours. Some have been on the world stage competing and some we are certain soon will be.. Beyond this however Free fall University students excel because of the coaching style of our chosen instructors and our approach to teaching where we have over come the likes of the " in out " syndrome which sees coaches not properly teach between flights . As a dropzone we are also commmitted to working with the tunnels and integrating them in our daily instructional activities. Put simply we blend in the best possible way the tunnel and the sky to make your progress simple. Talk to us today about where you are as an individual or a group and where you would like to go. Perhaps you will complete a coached jump with us and afford us the opportunity to tailor a sky and tunnel program just for you . The options as are the talent we have to offer you , endless.

  • The wind tunnel is expensive why should I add it ?
Firstly not everybody needs to train in the wind tunnel but many do benefit from the experience , some hugely. If you consider that the cost of a minute is approximately €10.50 per minute and compare it to the cost of an instructed skydive ( from ten to fifteen times that figure ) , it makes sense. The tunnel represents a lower stress environment versus the sky . We see that it is easier to show people new skills in a low stress environment.
  • Who will teach me in the tunnel ?
Our AFF instructors are rated to teach in the tunnel also ( being an AFF instructor does not legally allow one teach in the tunnel ) . We believe that training with your AFF instructor means continuity between the two medium and in the instance that you are doing the training between levels your instructor will be able to help you with a particular area causing you trouble ( e.g. leg awareness , general stability , turn control etc ). Our ambition is as with all our training to make it personal and avoid diluted or generic large group training.
  • Do i need to decide in advance ?
No , you can add the tunnel at any point you like , e.g some add it having completed the ground school having a more tangible idea of whats involved. Others add it half way through the course based on intuition ( or reccomendation as a tool to avoid costly extra tuition ) .. And some of course dont add it all. The fact is we can offer you the choice at any time based on your individual needs.
  • Should i do a tandem instead ?
Before we had tunnels we saw little value in a tandem skydive and resisted the temptation to use the only tool in the toolbox. Think of it this way , if your going to learn to drive a car , after doing the theory which makes more sense . To try out driving in a state of the art driving simulator with the instructor driving at your side or to sit into the drivers seat and get instance feedback from the instructor right beside you.
  • How is the time broken down ?
We will use our discretion but typically flights are 1 minute to 1.5 minutes with you entering and exiting with your instructor. Righ next to the flight chamber you will be able to review your last flight on HD displays and then move to briefing up for your next flight. We dont fudge the amount of time either , thus we refer to it in minutes so its easily compared and measured.
